
The resident population was 21.92 million on Jan. 1, 2023, down 0.4 percent from Jan. 1, 2022, the INS reported Friday. The urban and female population predominate (56.1% and 51.2%, respectively). The phenomenon of demographic aging intensified, when the elderly population aged 65 and older exceeds the youth aged 0-14 by more than 22% (3,893,000 versus 3,175,000 people).

Emigrants can also be included here, regardless of the period of their emigration. Do not confuse the population by place of residence with the permanent population – the actual population of Romania.
As of January 1, 2023, the population by place of residence in the urban environment was 12,304.2 thousand people and decreased compared to January 1, 2022 (0.7%); in rural areas – 9,617.8 thousand people, slightly decreased compared to January 1, 2022 (0.04%).
The size of the female population on January 1, 2023 was 11,224.2 thousand people, which is 0.4% less than on the corresponding date last year; the male population recorded the same evolution, which amounted to 10,697.7 thousand people.
In 2022, the process of demographic aging continued, with a slight decrease (by 0.2 p.p.) in the share of young people (0-14 years old) and at the same time an increase (by 0.4 p.p.) in the share of the elderly population (aged 65 and over older) in the total population.
The demographic aging index increased from 118.8 on January 1, 2022 to 122.6 elderly people per 100 young people on January 1, 2023.
The average age of the population was 42.2 years, which is 0.2 years more than on January 1, 2022. The average age of the population was 42.8 years and increased by 0.4 years compared to January 1, 2022.
In the total population on January 1, 2023, the largest share was the age group of 50-54 years (8.5%). In the same age group, the largest share is also among women (8.3%), while among men, the largest share is in the age group of 45-49 years (8.8%).
The share of the 0-4 years old group was 4.6%, less than the 5-9 years old (4.8%), 10-14 years old (5.1%) and 15-19 years old (5.2%) groups.
