Ukraine: “Inflated” expectations from the spring counter-offensive

Her Minister of Defense Ukrainian warned today against excessive expectations regarding the expected counterattack against Russian strength.

“Hopes are certainly too high, everyone is waiting for the next victory,” the 56-year-old minister told the Ukrainian RBC news agency.

Mr. Reznikov recalled that when the Russian army invaded the country in February 2022, there were hopes that Ukraine would simply survive.

“But when the armed forces of Ukraine began to record successes, everyone believed in victory,” he added and called it normal to expect success.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also said yesterday that in recent months, members and partners of the military alliance have supplied the Ukrainian armed forces with 230 tanks, more than 1,330 armored vehicles and “a large amount of ammunition.”

“More than 98% of the combat vehicles that we promised Ukraine have already been delivered,” the Norwegian told reporters in Brussels, accompanied by Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bethel.

“In total, we have trained and equipped more than nine new Ukrainian motorized rifle brigades,” he added.

Each NATO brigade consists of several thousand soldiers.

The alliance’s support puts “Ukraine in a strong position to continue rebuilding the occupied territories,” Mr. Stoltenberg added.
