Athens’ overall foreign guest satisfaction rate increased to 8.4 in 2022 from 8.1 in 2019, according to the 18th Attica Hotel Performance and Guest Satisfaction Survey conducted by Athens Attica and Argosaronic Hotel Association (EXAAA) in collaboration with Athens International Airport And GBR Consulting.
Despite different interests, almost all those who come to Athens, including professionals, are united, according to the survey, by the following: they usually visit the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, combining a walk around Plaka and Monastiraki. It also means that tourist flows are concentrated in certain areas, focusing almost exclusively on recreation and entertainment, and affecting residents who see the urban vitality of their areas declining. Awareness of the Athens waterfront has improved, with 63% of hotel guests visiting it, while most of those who haven’t been are now aware of it.
Awareness of the Argosaronic Islands is improving but still remains low. Meanwhile, passenger traffic and flights at Athens Airport in 2022 far exceeded the European average, with Athens International Airport ranking 3rd among European metropolitan airports. The pandemic continued to affect hotel operations in the first quarter of 2022, but since July 2022, occupancy rates have reached 2019 levels and figures. Thus, in total for 2022, occupancy rates decreased by 10.7% compared to 2019 year. However, the average room rate last year increased by 14.4% compared to 2019.
