
India will become the most populous country in the world during 2023, overtaking China, according to the United Nations. According to estimates by the World Population Review, an organization specializing in demography, India would have already topped this ranking, reaching 1.423 billion inhabitants, 5 million more than its neighbor to the north.
China, on the other hand, faced its first year of demographic decline in 60 years, according to Bloomberg.
But this is not necessarily a cause for celebration for the authorities in New Delhi. India has to face several highly sensitive economic challenges that could turn the country’s demographic factor into a weakness rather than a strength.
