Lemaire, who is scheduled to meet with the country’s energy companies today to discuss the issue, warned that the government has “tools to force energy suppliers to meet their obligations to the state and companies.”
However, he did not elaborate on what those tools might be, nor did he name the energy providers he would target.
“The state will not let anyone down. The state will not let its bakers down,” Lemaire told a press conference, stressing that the crisis came when the French baguette was added to the UN World Heritage List in November.
“The French state is doing its part to help bakers, energy providers should do their part,” added the French finance minister.
Lemaire also said the state would brief France’s 33,000 bakers in writing to detail the current and future assistance they can count on.
Earlier, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne confirmed plans to help French bakers cope with rising electricity prices by allowing them to spread their tax payments over time and possibly “pay their electricity bills in the first months of the year.”
