
According to research elders Italian union, Cgil, 9.2 million citizens face significant hardship either because they unemployedor because their work does not guarantee them a satisfactory income.
The research institute Giuseppe Di Vittorio, owned by the Cgil trade union, has started a survey of the unemployed and those who have given up hope and stopped looking for work. At this stage, it is about 4.3 million citizens.
At the same time, another 4.9 million citizens work for a short time or are forced to agree to urgent work with earnings that do not cover their needs. The difficulties, according to the Cgil union and the Di Vittorio Foundation, are more severe for young people under 24 and women.
Unemployment and poor conditions are directly linked to different age groups: in Italy, 61.7% of young people under 24 are unemployed, have stopped looking for work or are dissatisfied with their earnings and the length of their employment, while the corresponding percentage drops to 13.9% for citizens aged 55 to 64.
