Motor fuel: German prices soar again

After three months of reduced prices on motor fueltheir prices are back to high levels in Germanyafter the expiration of the fuel tax credit of one-quarter introduced as part of the mitigation measures energy crisis.

According to the first assessment by the German Automobile Association ADAC, by midnight the increase in the price of unleaded gasoline and diesel fuel was felt throughout Germany at 400 German filling stations from Hamburg and Berlin to Munich.

To date, the price of gasoline, regular and super, is again over two euros, while the price of diesel fuel ranges from 2.10 to 2.30 euros. While the benefits of the three-month 35-cent tax credit are still evident in the fuel market, experts expect more fuel price increases in the coming days, such as around 17 cents for unleaded gasoline.

Speculation risk

Meanwhile, representatives of the gas station industry are already sounding the alarm about cases of speculation, unfair competition between large networks and small gas stations.

At the same time, economists estimate that a return to more expensive motor fuels, combined with the expiration of a three-month €9 driving card across Germany, could push inflation back to its heights.

However, ADAC advises drivers in Germany to compare fuel prices at several filling stations before buying, while warning of “dynamic developments in motor fuel prices” in the near future.
