On Wednesday morning, an off-duty police officer reported that “a 4-year-old student had a loaded gun” at a Corpus Christi elementary school, according to police in that south Texas city.

Police officers went to the child’s home and identified the owners of the weapon, his parents. The father, aged 30, was arrested and charged with giving a child access to a firearm and endangering a minor.

Mass shootings from firearms often occur in American schools. In May, a gunman killed 19 students and two elementary school teachers in Uvalda, Texas. On Monday, a 7-year-old student went to school in Cochise, Arizona with a gun and bullets in his school bag. After the child’s father reported the disappearance of another of his guns, investigators found a second one hidden at the school. During interrogation, the parents admitted that they placed the weapons in places they considered safe, away from the children (…), but it seems that the young student managed to gain access and take it to the school, ”said the city sheriff.

The child was transferred to the juvenile court.

There are about 400 million guns in circulation in the United States, which exceeds the number of people in the country.
