Ford just introduced mine a new infotainment system, called the “Ford and Lincoln Digital Experience”: as the name suggests, it will be equipped with new models of the Ford and Lincoln brands, and will also be offered for the first time on the American premium SUV Lincoln Nautilus. But, of course, you will find it very soon on the new models decorated with the blue oval, and especially on those equipped with a 100% electric motor.
This new system based on Android Automotive has been designed to offer a connected and seamless experience, an extension of the intelligent applications that drivers are used to using on their smartphones, tablets or computers. This is how we find the built-in services of Google, Amazon, as well Apple CarPlay and Android Autowhich further enhance the on-board experience.
Ford: state-of-the-art infotainment system
The new Lincoln Nautilus is a great showcase for what this new infotainment system does best: between the dash and the base of the windshield, the model has a huge 48-inch immersive panoramic screen, which displays a lot of useful information for the driver as well as passengers. This is complemented by a a more traditional 11.1-inch touchscreenlocated in the center of the instrument panel.
Thus, it is possible adjust the display from it, placing applications and services where needed on the central touchscreen or large panoramic screen, such as displaying multimedia data, weather, fuel/electricity consumption or even Apple CarPlay or Android Auto integration.
We will also find Google services directly on board, such as Google Maps, which allow you to use connected GPS navigation, or even Google Assistant for a voice assistant. Users can also use Alexa to voice control their air conditioner, GPS navigation, phone or media player, and ask common questions to get relevant information in real time.
Fully customizable system
The system is based on user profileswhich allow each driver to define their preferences for use when entering the car: applications, contacts, preferred destinations, as well as personalized settings for seats, steering wheel and mirrors.
Thanks to App Store Google Play can also expand the functionality of its infotainment system by adding apps like Spotify, Amazon Music, Audible, YouTube, Prime Video or games like the Ford-exclusive version of Asphalt Nitro 2 that can be played with Bluetooth controller. Vivaldi Browser is also integrated, and Google Chrome is coming very soon: they can be used with a Bluetooth keyboard for easier typing and navigation.
Ford’s new infotainment system is connected via a 5G network and can share its onboard connection with a Wi-Fi hotspot. The American manufacturer says it is five times faster, 14 times more powerful for graphics processing and has four times more memory and eight times more storage space compared to Ford’s SYNC car infotainment system. With remote software updates, it will also be maintainable and scalable.
