Yannick Sinner reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Australian Open on Tuesday, the Italian’s best result in Melbourne. The fourth seed, a pupil of Darren Cahill, beat fifth seed Andriy Rublev 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-3.

The “curse” of the quarters once again befell the 26-year-old Russian, and Rublev once again exited the Grand Slam at this stage of the competition.

The only break in the first set belonged to Yannick, the set went back to the Italian 6-4.

There were a lot of break points in the second set, but in the end it came down to a tie-break where we had an incredible turn of events.

The Russian was accurate, aggressive and turned the score 5:1 in his favor. Unfortunately for Rublev, there was an unexpected fall and he went from 5-1 to 5-7.

Yannick scored six points in a row, winning in an extreme stretch.

In the third set, Rublev also showed signs of weakness from the very beginning, and the break happened in the sixth game (4-2).

• With Tuesday’s win, Grishnyk surpassed his best result in Melbourne. The Italian reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open for the first time.

• Yannick reached the penultimate act of the Grand Slam only once: at Wimbledon 2023 (it was Djokovic, his future opponent, who lost).

• On the other hand, Andriy (26 years old) remains with the “problem” of the quarterfinals, which he did not pass in any of the Grand Slam tournaments.

• Moreover, Rublev has ten losses in as many Grand Slam quarterfinal matches played. Of these, 8 came in minimal sets.

• Sinner (22) and Rublev (26) met seven times, now the score is 5-2 in favor of the Italian.

• Yannick Sinner will meet Novak Djokovic for the seventh time, the score 4-2 in favor of the Serb.
