Even though it’s 2024 and we’re discovering a new electric car almost every week, the thermal models aren’t dead yet, and neither are the “car craze.” Even if in France muscle cars have almost disappeared from official networks (except when you go to an importer), on the other side of the Atlantic, this segment is still dynamic and there is still a war going on between its three heroes.
Over the past two years, the Ford Mustang has overtaken the ranking of the best-selling sports cars in the United States. But in 2023, it reclaimed the throne at the expense of the Dodge Challenger, which dethroned it in 2021 with 54,314 units sold, and then in 2022 with 55,060 units sold and a second top spot. During those two years, the Mustang had to settle for second place with respective figures of 52,414 and 47,566 units sold.
The seventh generation of Ford Mustang enters the scene
In 2023, the Ford Mustang was reborn, introducing (albeit in small numbers) its seventh generation, recording 48605 approx sold in the last twelve months. This is 2.2% more than in fiscal year 2022.
In 2023, the Dodge Challenger was unlucky, with sales down 18% to 44,960 units. This drop is largely due to the discontinuation of the model, which was discontinued in December of the same year.
The Chevrolet Camaro also ended production in 2023, but unlike the Challenger, it has seen renewed interest among enthusiasts. With a notable increase of 25.9% compared to 2022, the Camaro recorded 31,028 examples delivered in 2023.
The future will be electric
In addition to the Mustang, the manufacturer’s sales figures were boosted by the Mustang Mach-E, which sold 40,771 units, up 3.3% from the previous year.
Dodge, for its part, has also had notable success with its Charger model, which will end production in 2023. Despite this, sales increased by 5% compared to the previous year and amounted to 75,920 vehicles delivered. The brand has already announced its vision for the future, planning to replace the Challenger and Charger with 100% electric vehicles.
