
The end of the legendary yellow Ford Crown Victoria and their imposing hot V8 is probably near… Nevertheless, American sedans have long been the majority in the metropolis of New York. Thanks to their hybrid engines, they have long shared the city’s large one-way boulevards with more compact and fuel-efficient cars. But the city wants to go even further in terms of electrification and mobility.
80,000 electric taxis by 2030
New York City Hall just signed an agreement with the city’s taxis and limousines. The purpose is that these become fully electric until 2030. In total, just under 80,000 cars were affected. 5% of them will have to switch to ions in 2024, 15% in 2025, a quarter in 2026, 45% in 2027, 65% in 2028, 85% in 2029 and all of them in 2030.
More accessible to everyone
But New York is not only looking to make its taxis greener and more environmentally friendly thanks to this project called “Green ride”, or “green trip” in French. The American metropolis also wants to do them easier to use by all clients. In addition to making them fully electric, the city also wants to make them compatible with the needs of people with reduced mobility.
Electrified only until 2035
New York is not the first to try to electrify its fleet. The city is already one of the areas with the highest number of EVs in the United States. But apparently New York wants to do even better. Last year, an entire US state launched a project to sell only electrified cars in its territory by 2035. The time is more or less equivalent to the Old Continent, except that in Europe we are talking about 100% electric, not just hybridization…
