Macron stressed that there was still no consensus on sending Western troops to Ukraine, but several countries later rejected the idea. The United States, Great Britain, Spain, and Germany took turns denying Emmanuel Macron, News.ro reports with reference to the BFMTV channel.

Criticized from all sides, including at home, Emmanuel Macron insisted on Thursday that his every word on Ukraine was “weighted” and “measured”, even as he also received a sharp response from Vladimir Putin.

“These are very serious topics. Every word I say on this subject is weighed, thought out and measured,” Macron said at the grand opening of the Olympic Village in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis.

The French president refused to make any further “geopolitical comments” in this context, saying that “this is not the place” and that “sport must allow unity and peace”.

On Monday, Emmanuel Macron called on Ukraine’s allies to “take action” to ensure the “defeat” of Russia through faster and greater supplies of arms and ammunition. He also broke the taboo by not ruling out the introduction of Western troops into Ukraine, although he emphasized that there is no consensus on this matter. Responding to these statements, the Kremlin leader on Thursday warned the West about the “real threat” of nuclear war in the event of an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

“They should understand that we also have weapons capable of hitting targets on their territory,” Vladimir Putin said.

A number of European countries, in particular Germany, Poland, Italy, and the Czech Republic, as well as the United States, categorically rejected the idea of sending ground troops.

“Vladimir Putin must know that there are risks for him as well,” the French diplomatic source emphasized, also clarifying that “it is not about (sending troops to) participate in hostilities in Ukraine.”
