Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko will run for president in 2025 elections – for the eighth consecutive term. He stated this in Sunday, February 25, at a polling station after voting in the elections for parliament and local authorities. According to him, the more the West “puts pressure” on Belarusians, “the faster they will go to elections.” “Nowhere in the world are there open and fair elections like in Belarus, this is a holiday for us,” said the country’s ruler.

Lukashenko has been in power in Belarus for almost 30 years. On the eve of the last presidential election in 2020, criminal cases were opened against his opponents. In particular, election campaign participants Sergei Tikhanovsky and Viktor Babariko are still in prison. After the vote, mass protests took place in the country, which the authorities brutally suppressed, and repressions related to these protests continue in the country to this day.

Lukashenko himself announced that he received more than 80% of the votes and declared himself president of the country. Dozens of Western countries did not recognize it as such and some called for new elections.
