Georgia’s State Security Service said on Monday it had seized a secret shipment of explosives from the Ukrainian port of Odesa, which was bound for the Russian city of Voronezh, Reuters reports.

Georgia’s Internal Security Agency said the explosives were hidden in a shipment of car batteries that entered Georgia in January by land from Ukraine via Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey and were seized at the Russian border.

The agency said in a statement that the shipment of explosives arrived in Georgia in a van owned by Ukrainians and was to be transported to Voronezh, a Russian city about 180 km from the Ukrainian border. For what purpose he did not specify.

In 2022, Russian investigators said the truckload of explosives used in the attack that severely damaged the Crimean Bridge in the October strike had traveled from Ukraine to Russia via a similar route.

The Security Service of Ukraine, which has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on Russian facilities, did not respond to a request for comment.

Georgia’s government, which says it opposes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and wants to ensure it does not spread to its own territory, has been accused of siding with Russia since the start of the war under Vladimir Putin.
