The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, acknowledges the brutality of some representatives of the Military Committees, who took men from the street to send them to the front, in the context of the scandalous bill on mobilization.
“There are images on the Internet of men being taken from the street by the military. What is the price of personal freedom in a country that is fighting for its freedom?” – asked Zelensky in an interview with the German channel ARD.
“The price of freedom?”… “First of all, these actions were wrong. If the representatives of the commissariats walked the streets and looked for people who did not appear in the commissions, then I would like to be honest and fair. Does this happen? So. Right? Absolutely not. This should not be the case. Therefore, we asked the army to propose a law so that this does not happen again,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy admits, News.ro reports.
The controversial bill on mobilization
This draft law, which should be considered in the Ukrainian parliament from February 11, has been temporarily withdrawn.
He fulfills the request of the Ukrainian army, which informed Volodymyr Zelensky about the need for conscription
450,000-500,000 new soldiers.
In this regard, at Christmas, the Government presented a draft law that provides for lowering the conscription age from 27 to 25 years, strengthening sanctions for those who disobey and simplifying the procedure for entering military service.
It was later returned to the Government for amendments.
Regarding the simplification of the enrollment procedure, in an interview with ARD, Volodymyr Zelenskyi emphasizes “the possibility of using the digital format.”
“We live in an era of digitalization, and we are a country that is very focused on these changes. We can solve this problem in a modern way,” he assures.
This bill aims to compensate for the heavy losses – which the Ukrainian army does not report – and to leave the billionaires who have been fighting against Russia for almost two years at the stake.
But the mobilization of new soldiers faces the need to maintain a sufficient workforce in Ukraine’s economic activity.
Some provisions of the draft law are very controversial and “directly violate human rights”, the leader of the parliamentary group of the presidential party “Servant of the People” David Aharamiya condemned in Telegram.
Among them, he mentions expanding the powers of representatives of personnel centers and sending summons in electronic form.
The Ukrainian government is working on an amendment to the draft law for the approval of the deputies.
