Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Monday in Brussels that Hungary will remain out of the supply of arms to Ukraine and will not make a financial contribution within the EU for such supplies, but will not block other European countries from sending them to Kyiv if they so wish. .
The member states of the European Union “still refuse to give up their failed strategy (…) The longer the war drags on, the more people die and the greater the destruction will be,” said Peter Sijarto at a press conference after the meeting of foreign ministers of European countries , reports the press agency MTI and EFE, which is quoted by Agerpres.
He called “disappointing” and “unacceptable” the proposal of the European External Action Service (EEAS) that EU countries this year contribute to a fund called the European Peace Facility in the amount of 5 billion euros for the purchase of weapons intended for Ukraine.
However, Szijjarto welcomed the fact that the proposal was “softened” compared to the original one, which called for 5 billion euros in each of the next four years to be used for the fund, which was used for military aid given to Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Of the 5 billion, the amount that Hungary must contribute is 60.1 million euros, the Hungarian minister said. “Giving a new impetus to the supply of weapons (to Ukraine) is absolutely unacceptable” for Hungary, so Budapest will not contribute to these efforts, but also does not want to block other European governments from supplying weapons to Ukraine, but in the end everyone will answer to their own electorate, said Peter Szijjarto .
He suggested that the EU quickly open communication channels, take measures for a ceasefire and the start of peace talks.
“Hungary will oppose any sanctions aimed at the nuclear industry”
Szijjártó also noted that the foreign ministers of European countries discussed the 13th package of sanctions against Russia at a meeting on Monday, “although the imposed restrictions mainly affected Europe and did not bring the conflict closer to a solution.”
He emphasized that he had warned his European colleagues that Hungary would oppose any sanctions aimed at the nuclear sphere, recalling that Washington had not imposed such sanctions against Russia, which is still the main supplier of enriched uranium to the United States.
