The President of the Senate Nicolae Chuke said on Monday that it is quite possible to adopt and implement the legislative draft of the UDMR, which stipulates that elections take place no later than 90 days before the date of the end of the term of office of the President of Romania.
Asked on Monday in parliament whether it was possible for the UDMR bill to be passed by both chambers first, and after the European Parliament elections a decision was made to apply a legislative initiative, Nicolae Chuke replied: “It is very possible. “, – writes News. ro.
Several parliamentarians from the UDMR submitted to the Senate in December a project proposing to hold elections no later than 90 days before the end of the Romanian president’s term. On behalf of the initiators, the legislative initiative was signed by the leader of UDMR senators Cheke Attila.
The PNL wants to combine local elections with the first round of presidential elections
Coalition leaders met two weeks ago in the Government to discuss the future of the 2024 elections. The Liberals want to propose combining local elections with the first round of presidential elections at the end of September. On the other hand, the Social Democrats would agree to the proposal on one condition.
- The NLP insists on combining local elections with the first round of presidential elections. PSD has a condition / Scenarios discussed in the Coalition
The decision on possible unification of local elections with the first round of presidential elections should be made no later than the beginning of March. According to the election recommendations, changes aimed at the organization of elections should be made at least six months before their holding.
The NLP proposes to hold both types of elections on the same day, on the last Sunday of September. The second round of presidential elections was supposed to take place in mid-October, and the new president would take office in December.
The stake of this scenario is the effective mobilization of the electorate of the main parties. More precisely, “in local elections, mayors are directly interested and involved in getting as many votes as possible. By combining the two types of elections, the parties of the system maximize the use of resources and benefit from mobilization and vote maximization, obtaining the best results in both local and presidential elections. In addition, George Simion’s candidacy for the presidency may be marginalized,” HotNews.ro’s political sources claim.
Procedurally, presidential elections will be held at the end of November, on the last weekend of the month, followed by parliamentary elections, and then the second round of presidential elections.
SDP conditions the merger of elections
The PSD will support the unification of elections on the condition that both parties support a joint presidential candidate, political sources say. In addition, the candidacies of Nicolae Chuke and Mircea Joane would have been excluded by the Social Democrats, considering them unacceptable candidates from their point of view.
Late last year, PSD official sources said they were considering combining local elections with the first round of presidential elections in September 2024.

- It will be “quite difficult” for Nikolay Chuke to reach the presidential finals, says Vasile Dinku. “With some agreements, election fabrications, there would be an opportunity”
