Ukraine attacked an oil warehouse in the north of Russia with the help of drones on the night from Wednesday to Thursday, a source in the Ukrainian special services told AFP on Thursday, a new case of strikes by Ukrainians on the territory of Russia, writes Agerpres.
According to a source quoted by AFP, Ukrainian military services will be responsible for this operation in the Leningrad region (northwest), which includes, in particular, the large city of St. Petersburg and is located approximately 1,000 km from the Ukrainian border.
Some local media, in particular “Ukrainian Pravda” and RBC, also report with reference to sources that the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUD) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is behind this operation.
“This is a GUR operation that uses modern Ukrainian means. The collection of data continues, but we already know about confirmed strikes on the intended targets,” a source in the Ukrainian special services, quoted by the EFE agency, told the “Ukrainian Pravda” publication.
“From now on, military facilities in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region are in the zone of action of Ukrainian forces,” she added.
Earlier, the independent Russian Telegram channel “Astra” said that the drone fell and exploded on the territory of the oil terminal in St. Petersburg.
According to the source of “Ukrainian Pravda”, it is not the first time that Ukraine has attacked the Leningrad region with drones, but “the enemy felt their impact” for the first time.
However, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on Thursday that one unmanned aerial vehicle was destroyed in the Moscow region, and the other in the Leningrad region.
According to Astra, the oil depot in St. Petersburg began its operations in 1996 and is the largest oil product transshipment base in the Baltic Sea region with an annual production capacity of 12.5 million tons.
In addition, the UNIAN agency writes, one of the drones flew over the Valdai district, where Russian oligarchs Arkady and Boris Rotenberg, the ex-chairman of the board of directors of the bank “Russia”, and Yuriy Kovalchuk, all three of them are close, live. President, have the characteristics of Russian Vladimir Putin. Valdai is the district where one of Putin’s palaces is located.
Ukraine has stepped up its attacks in Russia in recent months, but has generally focused on border regions such as Belgorod, but Ukrainian services have also reported sabotage in regions much further afield, such as in Russia’s Far East.
