German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday that most European Union member states are not supplying Ukraine with enough weapons to help it in its war against Russia, and called for increased EU efforts in this direction, Reuters and Agerpres reported.
In the context of the blocking of US aid to Kyiv in Congress, Scholz insisted on the need to increase Europe’s support for Ukraine, saying that the German government will support Kyiv as long as it is necessary.
Germany came under fire in the first months of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for not providing the military support Kyiv expected from one of Europe’s biggest powers.
However, Germany is currently one of the main providers of military and financial aid. At the end of last year, Berlin decided to double military aid to Ukraine in 2024 – up to 8 billion euros.
“Planned arms deliveries to Ukraine by most EU countries are insufficient”
“No matter how significant Germany’s contribution is, it will not be enough to ensure the long-term security of Ukraine. That is why I am asking our allies in the European Union to step up their efforts towards Ukraine. Planned arms deliveries to Ukraine by most EU countries are not enough,” Scholz said at a press conference in Berlin.
He added that Germany has asked the EU to check in each member state what supplies it intends to make, as not all of these supplies are known.
Olaf Scholz expressed confidence that at the extraordinary summit on February 1, the leaders of the EU states will approve the proposal of the European Commission to provide Ukraine with an aid package of 50 billion euros. At the December EU summit, it was not possible to make a decision on this issue due to Hungary’s opposition.
