During 2023, half a million people will join the Russian army under contract, the vice-president of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, said on Thursday, EFE and Agerpres reported.
“I want to inform you that as of January 1, 2023, half a million people joined the army as professional soldiers,” Medvedev wrote in Telegram.
The RBC portal, referring to the message of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, noted that at the moment, 640,000 people work in the Russian army under professional contracts.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 14 that about 1,500 people sign contracts with the army every day.
In September 2022, Putin mobilized 300,000 reservists to fight in Ukraine.
This partial mobilization caused hundreds of thousands of Russians of draft age to flee, emigrating mainly to neighboring countries such as Kazakhstan or Georgia.
Given the unpopularity of this measure, Moscow decided to focus on offering attractive professional contracts to Russians and immigrants from the post-Soviet space, in addition to conscripts undergoing military service.
