Germany’s plans to deploy a brigade in Lithuania from 2027 will lead to an “escalation of military tensions” between Russia and NATO, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moscow, Maria Zakharova, said on Wednesday.
Zakharova made such comments after the plan was agreed between Germany and Lithuania last week, writes Sky News.
The agreement provides for the deployment of a permanent German brigade of about 4,800 soldiers in Lithuania, near the country’s border with Russia.
This comes amid fears that Vladimir Putin could pose a risk to NATO countries if he succeeds in the war in Ukraine.
Earlier in the day, the head of the Belgian army warned that Russia could still target the Republic of Moldova and the Baltic states, telling the countries they should be “worried”.
