Moscow wants to dig a tunnel under the Sea of Azov, a desperate solution to ensure a safe connection between Crimea and Russia, given the repeated Ukrainian attacks on the Kerch bridge, the American newspaper Washington Post (WP) reported, as cited by the News. .ro.

The Ukrainian special services (SBU) provided WP journalists with intercepted reports that the heads of Russian and Chinese enterprises discussed the project in late October. This idea appeared in Moscow at the end of last year, after the Kerch bridge connecting Crimea with Russia was shelled for the first time on October 8.

The bridge, the only infrastructure that provides a stable link between the peninsula, illegally annexed by Moscow in 2014, and the rest of Russian territory, has since been the target of several attacks planned by Ukrainian special forces and Kyiv’s secret services. In August of this year, Ukrainian troops also fired missiles at the Kerch Bridge.

In this way, the underwater tunnel will ensure the supply of the peninsula in case the bridge is badly damaged or taken out of service in the long term.

Is China Abandoning “Neutrality” to Help Russia?

It is surprising, however, that Russia is planning this pharaonic project together with China. Emails intercepted by the SBU, the Security Service of Ukraine, which the Washington Post writes that it consulted and certified, indicate that one of China’s largest construction firms has signaled its willingness to participate in the project.

The American newspaper writes that a Russian-Chinese consortium was recently created for this purpose in Crimea.

This alliance may seem strange, given China’s declared neutrality regarding the war in Ukraine, as well as the fact that it “never recognized the annexation of Crimea,” WP notes.

As for the feasibility of the project, the cost would run into the billions of dollars and take years, according to engineering experts contacted by The Washington Post for comment.
