Alla Pugacheva, a 74-year-old singer who enjoyed immense popularity in Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union for decades, left the country for Israel with her husband a few weeks after the start of the war in Ukraine, News.ro reports.

In September 2022, she attracted widespread attention from both supporters and opponents of the conflict, saying that Russian soldiers were dying for “illusory purposes” and that the country had become a “pariah”. She also suggested that the Russian authorities declare her also a “foreign agent” – such a status has already been applied to her husband Maxim Galkin, an actor and comedian.

Although Russia passed a law after the war began that provided for prison terms or fines for defamation of the armed forces, Pugacheva was not charged.

She returned to Russia in May to attend the funeral of fashion designer Valentin Yudashkin, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was spotted kissing her hand.

She later left the country but returned this week, Russian news agencies reported on Friday. The reason for his departure from Israel, which is at war with Hamas, has not been disclosed.

Russian Orthodox Church spokesman Vakhtang Kipsidze was quoted by state news agency RIA Novosti as saying that Russians “who, when they left, insulted their people or made contradictory statements should apologize.” “This also applies to Alla Borisivna,” the official added, referring to Alla Pugacheva’s patronymic.

The Russian Church was a firm supporter of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
