The Internal Intelligence Service of Ukraine on Wednesday accused two villagers who fled to Russia of helping to launch a rocket attack on the village of Groza in the Kharkiv region, which killed dozens of people, Reuters reports.
The Oct. 5 strike was the deadliest against Ukrainian civilians this year, and the second deadliest since the start of the war, after Russia’s bombing of the Mariupol theater last March.
In the latest balance sheet released by the Ukrainian authorities, it is stated that 55 people died in the village, when it was home to approximately 300 residents. Local officials explained the large number of victims by the fact that many of the dead took part in a rally for the fallen soldier, which was organized in a village cafe.
A grocery store was also destroyed during the attack.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported on its Telegram channel on Wednesday that two villagers suspected of helping the Russians, two brothers, worked for the occupation authorities at a time when the village was controlled by Moscow forces for several months. year.
The SBU says that the men fled to Russia shortly before the liberation of the village during the catastrophic collapse of the Russian front in Kharkiv Oblast last September.
How two brothers prepared an attack on the village of Groza
The Kyiv Security Service says that after the liberation of the city, the brothers continued to work for Russia, building a network of information gathering in Ukraine.
Reuters reporters who visited the village last Friday said two local residents told them that SBU agents had been checking the villagers’ phones after the attack.
According to the SBU, the brothers started collecting information about the rally that was to take place in the village a few days before its organization, at the beginning of October.
“Under the guise of friendly conversations and correspondence in messengers, the traitors demanded information from people about the deployment of the Security Forces and mass events in the region,” the SBU said.
Ukrainian intelligence has released several images showing Russian passports and other documents belonging to the men, as well as screenshots of the men’s conversations about the watch.
