The Ukrainian government on Monday fired all six deputy defense ministers after appointing a new minister, Rustem Umerov, earlier this month. Among the recalled deputies is Hanna Malyar, who last week apparently made a gross mistake by prematurely announcing the capture of the village by Ukrainian troops during a counteroffensive in the southeast, writes Reuters.
The government in Kyiv has not given any reasons for the dismissals, but such moves are common after the appointment of a new minister. Among those removed is Hanna Malyar, who often gives public news about Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Malyar, a war crimes lawyer, has served as deputy defense secretary since 2021, and his latest update on the war in Ukraine came Monday morning. She faced criticism last week after initially reporting that Ukrainian forces had recaptured a village in the country’s east from Russian forces, but later said her report was inaccurate and that fighting was still ongoing around the village of Andriivka, 10 km from Bakhmut . . The army announced its capture the next day, but Russia has since denied it had lost control of the village.
Rustem Umerov became the Minister of Defense less than two weeks ago, replacing Oleksiy Reznikov in this position. During Reznikov’s administration, the Ministry of Defense was the target of corruption allegations in the media, although he himself did not face corruption allegations.
“Rebooting. I started We continue. (The Ministry) continues to work as usual,” Umerov wrote on Facebook.
“Ukrainian Pravda”, citing sources in the government, reported that all the deputy ministers resigned of their own accord at the request of Umerov and will not return to their positions. According to the source, consultations are underway on candidates to replace them, and a source close to the ministry said that the ministry is “undergoing a full review.”
Umerov stated that among his priorities are the transformation of the ministry into the main coordinating institution of the defense forces of Ukraine, increasing the value of soldiers, the development of the Ukrainian military industry, and the fight against corruption. (Source: News.ro)
