
Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly agreed to make his first trip abroad since then The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for war crimes, he reports Bloomberg. The Kremlin said a program of bilateral Russian-Chinese contacts was being developed and would later provide more detailed information on any developments and specific data, Reuters reported.
The Kremlin is preparing Putin’s visit to China for the Belt and Road Forum in October, three people with knowledge of the situation said on condition of anonymity. Putin has accepted an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the event, one of the sources said.
Putin did not leave Russia after the Hague Tribunal announced the mandate in March, although he visited the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine. Last week, he turned down an invitation to a BRICS summit in South Africa after the government there said it would have to execute an arrest warrant for him as a signatory to the ICC. He also told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he would not attend next month’s Group of 20 summit, even though India has not signed the Rome Statute, the founding instrument of the International Criminal Court.
Earlier this month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he expected to host Putin for talks in August. Instead, Erdogan plans to travel to Sochi next week to meet with the Kremlin leader.
Asked about a Bloomberg report that President Vladimir Putin was preparing to visit China for the Belt and Road Forum in October, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said:
- “A program of Russian-Chinese bilateral contacts at various levels, including the highest, is being agreed upon. We will inform you about specific events and deadlines in a timely manner.”
After the invasion of Ukraine, Putin visited only countries of the former Soviet Union and Iran, which supplies drones to the Russian military.
