Lithuania, a NATO member, closed two of the six border crossings it has with the Republic of Belarus on Friday to deal with the risk posed by Wagner’s mercenary group, Lithuanian border police announced, AFP reported.

“The Sumsko and Tveretsiaus border crossings were closed at midnight,” Lithuanian border police spokeswoman Lina Laurinaitite-Grygiene said, adding that barbed wire barriers would be installed throughout the day.

Lithuania, which is a member of NATO, intends to respond in this way to growing tensions in relations with its neighbors, in particular with Belarus, which Vilnius accuses of provocations.

This decision is also motivated by the fight against smuggling, since the other four checkpoints are equipped with X-ray detection systems, unlike the other two, which are closed on Fridays.

He also seeks to limit the number of trips between the two countries. During the first half of this year, Lithuanians crossed the border with Belarus 230,000 times.

Lithuania fears that the authorities in Minsk may try to recruit spies among these travelers by resorting to blackmail or other means of pressure.

Relations between the two countries have always been strained, but have further soured following the disputed 2020 presidential election in Belarus.

The Minsk authorities called the Lithuanian neighbor’s decision “crazy”.
