Poland is considering deploying around 10,000 troops as a “deterrent” on its eastern border with Moscow’s ally Belarus, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said Thursday, according to AFP.

“There will be about 10,000 soldiers, of which 4,000 will be directly involved in border police support operations and another 6,000 as reinforcements,” Mariusz Blaszczak said in an intervention on Polish radio, according to Agerpres.

Poland’s defense minister announced a day earlier that 2,000 additional soldiers would be sent within 15 days to reinforce the border with Belarus, to join the other 2,000 already stationed in the area.

Poland, which is a member of NATO, recently warned about the threat of provocations from Belarus and the potential danger from the Russian mercenary group Wagner, which is based on Belarusian territory.

Warsaw accuses Minsk and Moscow of organizing a new flow of migrants to the European Union with the aim of destabilizing the region.

According to the Polish Border Service, 19,000 migrants have tried to enter Poland since the beginning of this year, compared to 16,000 for the whole of 2022.

Over 4,000 migrants tried to cross the border with Poland last month alone.
