An official in Kyiv said on Wednesday that Ukraine’s recent counteroffensive to retake Russian-occupied territories is expected to be “long and difficult” because of problems with Western arms supplies and Russian-planted mines, AFP reported. In particular, Ukraine needs new Western tanks and F-16s.

Ukrainian forces launched a major operation in early June to push Russian forces south and east, but the offensive has so far met with only modest success due to Russia’s strong defenses of trenches and minefields.

“Without a doubt, this operation will be quite difficult, long and will require a lot of time,” Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the President of Ukraine, told the French news agency.

According to Podoliak, the main obstacle to the advancement of Ukrainian forces at the moment is “the length of the minefields that the Russian army has been laying for months, which stretch from “4 to 16 kilometers”.
