Lavrov had no intention of contacting his American counterpart in Jakarta, his spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
Instead, Lavrov met with China’s highest-ranking diplomat, Wang Yi. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the two sides will “strengthen their communication and strategic coordination.”
Separately, Wang Yi also met with Anthony Blinken.
Other issues that dominated discussions in Indonesia included North Korea’s missile launches, the US-China rivalry and the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that the forum agreed to “strengthen preventive diplomacy.”
