In a video published on social networks, it can be seen that the Ukrainian military does not give up the use of home-made ammunition against Russian military equipment, having managed to spectacularly destroy a Russian T-80U tank with a drone grenade launcher.

The 27th “Pechersk” brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine took responsibility for the strike, the footage shows how the night strike led to the catastrophic detonation of ammunition on board the Russian T-80 tank.

According to the independent website Oryx, this will be the 94th confirmed strike by the Ukrainians against the Russian T-80U tank, an improved version of the original T-80 tank, which entered service with the Soviet armed forces in 1976.

It is believed that before the start of the war in Ukraine, the Russian armed forces had about 200 T-80 tanks, and about 5,000 more were in long-term storage and needed repair and modernization. It is not known how many of them were prepared to be sent to the front.

The T-80U was adopted by the Soviet Army in 1985 with an improved turret, a modernized aiming system and dynamic “Kontakt-5” armor. Starting from 1990, T-80U models were also equipped with anti-tank missiles.

Also, a separate video shows how the Ukrainians hit a 122-millimeter self-propelled howitzer 2C1 “Gvozdika” that entered the USSR in 1972 with a grenade launcher from a drone, and this also caused the detonation of catastrophic ammunition inside the Russian combat vehicle:

The difference between self-made drone ammunition and kamikaze drones

The footage confirms that the Ukrainian military is still using home-made munitions on the frontline, while most of the videos that have emerged in recent months showing strikes on Russian tanks or armored vehicles have been carried out by artillery or kamikaze drones.

The advantage of the latter is that they can be directed at Russian combat vehicles to hit moving targets, which is impossible with the use of self-made ammunition of drones.

Although the Ukrainian military has perfected this technique of using drones to launch hand grenades and other types of improvised munitions in the months since the invasion, it is only effective against static targets for one obvious reason: once it moves, the shot cannot be adjusted.

But while kamikaze drones can hit moving targets, the use of home-made munitions has a major advantage, as it can permanently put millions of rubles worth of damaged Russian tanks out of action, which could otherwise be salvaged and repaired by Russian army engineers with highly effective munitions. .cheap.
