Iran has joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The decision was announced on Tuesday, July 4th, at the 23rd SCO summit chaired by India.

At the end of the meeting of the Council of Heads of State – members of the SCO, a solemn ceremony of raising the state flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) was held in front of the secretariat building in Beijing, according to the press service of the organization he said. The event was attended by heads of diplomatic missions from member states, observer countries and accredited SCO dialogue partners in China, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming and Iranian Ambassador to China Mukhsen Bakhtiyar spoke at the ceremony.

Belarus could join the SCO in 2024

The meeting of the leaders of the SCO member states was held by videoconference. The President of the Russian Federation, addressing the audience, said that Russia is in favor of the speedy completion of the process of joining the SCO of Belarus. This could happen as early as 2024 at the SCO summit in turn, says India’s Secretary of International Affairs Vinay Mohan Kvatra.

He added that on July 4, the SCO heads of states formalized a memorandum on Belarus’s obligations to join the organization.

Founded in 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization includes India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
