Poland and Lithuania will do everything in their power to ensure that Ukraine becomes a member of NATO as soon as possible, Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Wednesday during a visit to Kyiv, reports Reuters. On the other hand, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Ukraine understands that it cannot join NATO during the war, but Kyiv wants to receive a signal that it can join the military alliance after the end of the war.
- “We will do everything to make it happen as soon as possible,” Duda said at the press conference.
- “We are trying to ensure that the decisions taken at the (NATO) summit clearly indicate the prospect of accession, we are having discussions on this topic with our allies.”
At the same time, Zelensky noted that Ukraine also wants security guarantees for the period until it can join the alliance.
- “We understand that we cannot be NATO members during the war, but we must be sure that after the war we will be,” Zelensky said at a press conference with the visiting presidents of Poland and Lithuania.
- “This is the signal we want to receive – that after the war, Ukraine will be a member of NATO.”
- “We would like a third signal at the NATO summit that Ukraine will receive security guarantees – not instead of (joining) NATO, but for the period until we join the alliance,” he said.
