The countries of the European Union will train 30,000 Ukrainian soldiers in 2023, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced on Tuesday as part of the army’s counteroffensive to liberate territories occupied by Russia.

“In 2023, as part of the EU military aid mission to Ukraine, it is planned to train 30,000 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including servicemen of the Territorial Defense Forces,” the ministry said in a Telegram message.

“The strategic goal is to strengthen the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to effectively conduct operations, protect the sovereignty and restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine, (as well as) protect the civilian population,” he continued.

The announcement comes on the same day as the European Commission’s request to EU member states for a €50 billion budget extension for the 27-nation budget to help Ukraine until 2027.

“We live in a very different world than in 2020, when the EU’s multiannual budget was being negotiated,” explained the president of the European executive, Ursula von der Leyen, during a press briefing in Brussels on Tuesday.
