Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, will make his first appearance in federal court in Delaware on July 26 to face charges of tax evasion and firearms possession, according to a court filing filed on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to two minor charges of willfully evading income taxes and take a deal that could avoid conviction on firearms charges, the Justice Department said Tuesday.
As a rule, such agreements provide for the dismissal of the relevant criminal charges if the defendant complies with the terms of the agreement for a specified period of time. This “diversion agreement” functions as an intervention program to correct the behavior that led to the charge.
“Hunter feels it’s important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during the upheavals and addictions of his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward,” Biden’s attorney Christopher Clark said.
The charges against Hunter Biden stemmed from an investigation by David Weiss, the US attorney in the Democratic president’s home state of Delaware, who was appointed by former Republican President Donald Trump.
Hunter Biden, the first child of a sitting president to be indicted
Hunter Biden, 53, has been the target of attacks by Trump and his Republican allies for years.
Hunter Biden, who has worked as a lobbyist, lawyer, investment banker and artist, has publicly described his struggles with cocaine and alcohol abuse.
Sources told Reuters the investigation into Weiss initially looked into possible violations of tax laws and money laundering in his dealings with China. According to US media reports, the investigation led by Weiss began back in 2018.
Hunter Biden appears to be the first child of a sitting president to be indicted, according to Aaron Crawford, who specializes in presidential history at the University of Tennessee.
The president is survived by two children, Hunter Biden and daughter Ashley Biden. His son Beau Biden died in 2015 of cancer, and his daughter Naomi Biden died in infancy after a car accident that also killed Joe Biden’s first wife.
