The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, said on Saturday that more than 4,800 bomb shelters have been checked in Ukraine and found that about 20% of them are unfit for use, reports The Kyiv Independent.
According to Klymenko, out of the total number of more than 4,800 shelters, 252 were closed, and 893 were unsuitable.
The information appeared after this week a group of civilians could not get to the shelter in Kyiv during night rocket fire from Russia, News.ro reminds. On June 1, three people, including a mother and her nine-year-old daughter, died when they tried to enter the shelter with the door closed.
The death caused public outrage and the promise of a tough response from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi. On Friday, he ordered an inspection of all civil protection shelters in the country.
As part of the criminal proceedings, four people were detained in connection with these deaths. The security guard, who was supposed to open the shelter’s doors, was placed in a preventive measure, and the other three people, including a local official, were taken under house arrest.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, announced that in the future inspections will also take place in anti-aircraft shelters.
