The United States has begun training Ukrainian troops in modern Abrams tanks, but has warned that the armored vehicles will not be ready in time for Kyiv’s imminent counteroffensive, Sky News reports.

About 200 Ukrainian soldiers began 12 weeks of training on American tanks in Germany over the weekend.

Soldiers learn to drive vehicles as well as fire and perform complex field operations.

Another 200 soldiers are trained to refuel and maintain tanks.

Speaking in France on the 79th anniversary of D-Day, US Army General Mark Milley said “tanks are very important both defensively and offensively”.

He said the “advanced tanks that have been modernized” and the training that goes with them “will be fundamental to Ukraine’s success.”

There is hope that Ukrainian troops will be trained before the 31 tanks promised by Joe Biden arrive in Ukraine in the fall.
