OUR chess player Indian Domaragio Gukes defeated five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen in a blitz match.
“Beating Magnus is always special, but I wasn’t too proud of that match,” he said in his post-fight analysis.
The match in which Gukes defeated Carlsen on Monday was held to determine each player’s place in the classic event that followed. The tournament, which takes place in Stavanger, Norway, features 10 players competing in a single round robin.
The winner will receive approximately $68,400 and the runner-up will receive $36,500.
After three games in the official tournament, Gukes is fourth in the standings with one win, one loss and one draw. Carlsen is eighth without a win after two draws and one loss. Fabiano Caruana is leading the standings.
Last week, Carlsen won his first tournament after relinquishing the world title he had held for ten years.
A few years ago, a 17-year-old squandered the opportunity to become the youngest chess grandmaster of all time. This unofficial title is now held by Abhimanyu Mishra, who became a grandmaster at the age of 12 years, four months and 25 days.
