India: 80 dead and 850 injured in train collision

At least 80 people have been killed and 850 injured in a collision between two trains in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, according to the latest official count.

A Coromandel Express en route from Kolkata to Chennai collided with another Howrah Superfast Express passenger train near Balasore, railway officials said. According to the South Eastern Railway, the second train derailed and its carriages became entangled with the wreckage of the first.

Earlier, local media reported that the Coromandel Express collided with a freight train.

Local official Pradeep Jena told AFP that the death toll was 80 and more than 850 injured. “Now our top priority is to evacuate (survivors) and treat the injured,” he added.

Footage from the crash site shows rescuers attempting to climb onto the wreckage of the train in search of survivors.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the government’s priority was “to get the living to hospitals and take care of the survivors.”

Rescue teams have been mobilized for the search and rescue operation from Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar, 200 kilometers away, and from Kolkata in West Bengal, Transport Minister Ashwini Vaishnow said. The National Disaster Response Force, out-of-state rescue teams, and the Air Force were also mobilized.

“We expect the rescue operation to continue until at least tomorrow morning. For our part, we have prepared all the major public and private hospitals from here to the state capital to treat the wounded,” the spokesman said. He added that 75 ambulances and “many buses” were sent to transport the victims to the scene.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life in a train collision in eastern India in a tweet.

He also expresses sincere condolences to the families of the victims and a speedy recovery to the injured. At this difficult moment, underlines the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Greece stands in solidarity with the people and government of India.
