“We are people with perception, and we will not drag any NATO country into the war,” he said during a joint briefing in Kyiv with the Estonian president. Alar Karis.

“And that is why we understand that we will not join NATO while this war is going on. Not because we don’t want to, but because it’s impossible.”

Britain supports Ukraine’s accession to NATO and “the path is open” although political realities could slow that process, the UK defense secretary said on Friday. Ben Wallaceon the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue security meetings in Singapore.

He noted that it was not possible to add members in the midst of a war and that assistance to equip Ukraine would continue for both short-term and long-term security.

“The best thing we can do to help Ukraine now is to help them defeat Russia,” he said, adding: “After that, make sure they are resilient.”

Ukraine’s accession to NATO is on the agenda of the group’s July summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.

President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelenskysaid that Kyiv wants a “clear decision” at the summit on the accession of the country.
