The Ministry of the Interior responds to some questions that have arisen in connection with changes in the procedure parliamentary elections 25 June 2023 compared to May 21, 2023
Are the parliamentary elections of 25 June 2023 the second round of the elections held on 21 May 2023?
No. The parliamentary elections of June 25, 2023 are a separate new electoral process, independent of the electoral process of May 21, 2023. Therefore, designations such as “runoff” or “re-elections” are incorrect.
Has the electoral system remained the same?
The parliamentary elections on June 25, 2023 will be held under a strengthened proportional system, in contrast to the elections on May 21, which were held under a simple proportional system.
How to vote for deputies?
The upcoming elections will be held with a limited combination (list) and not with a preferential cross. As part of this process, deputies are elected according to the order of their ranking on the ballot papers of each constituency, which is determined by the respective party headquarters. Therefore, we DO NOT give up on party ballots. In addition, there will be no stylus on the screens of polling stations that you create.
Are the ballots used in the May 21, 2023 elections valid?
No. The parliamentary elections on June 25, 2023 will be held using new ballots, which will be printed on the basis of what is provided for by the current legislation. Thus, ballot papers relating to the elections of May 21, 2023 and for any reason left with voters become invalid and cannot be used.
I am a non-resident. Can I vote where I live?
Yes, if your application was submitted to and processed by the relevant municipality no later than April 30, 2023, you can vote in your municipality where you live. An application not processed by this date will not be considered for the upcoming election process. In any case, voters are encouraged to refer to the Department of the Interior’s “Know Where You Vote” platform to find out where they vote.
I am a Greek living abroad and I missed the deadline to vote in the previous elections. What will apply now?
Greeks abroad can vote at their place of residence if an application for registration in the special voter lists has been submitted to the relevant platform of the Ministry of the Interior (https://apodimoi.gov.gr) before Wednesday, May 17, 2023. It is specified that in order for the application to be approved the criteria defined by the current legislation must be observed.
In the previous elections, I voted abroad, but on June 25, 2023 I will be in Greece. Will I be able to vote?
The deadline for submitting an application to suspend registration on special voter lists abroad is Friday, May 26, 2023. Any application submitted after this date will not be considered for the upcoming election process. In any case, voters are encouraged to refer to the Department of the Interior’s “Know Where You Vote” platform to find out where they vote.
Am I voting in the same polling station where I voted in the May 21, 2023 elections?
This is most likely, however, as there may be some changes to the polling stations, all voters are urged to refer to the Department of the Interior’s “Know Where You Vote” platform to find out where they vote.
