On Monday, Ukrainian parliamentarians adopted a draft of sanctions against Iran, accused of supplying weapons to Moscow for its invasion, a draft that marks a rift between Kyiv and the Islamic Republic, Agence France-Presse and Agerpres reported.

“This resolution synchronizes Ukrainian sanctions with the actions of the entire civilized world on the way to the complete isolation of Iran,” the Verkhovna Rada said in a statement.

This package of sanctions provides for the prohibition of military trade with Iran, the termination of transit through Ukraine of Iranian goods and the “suspension of economic and financial obligations in favor of residents of Iran.”

The text still needs to be signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in order to be made public, a formality, since the latter submitted the resolution to the parliament at the suggestion of his Security and Defense Council.

Zelensky: “Checkered drones terrorize Ukraine every night”

Iran is a close partner of Russia and has been accused by Kyiv and the West of supplying the weapons Moscow is using to invade Ukraine, particularly the explosive Shahed drones.

Even if Kyiv initially tried to convince the Islamic Republic, the failure of this approach seems obvious today.

“Today’s Iran is a terrorist regime that is a threat to Europe and the Middle East,” Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the President of Ukraine, condemned on Twitter on Sunday.

His message came after the biggest Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian capital since the beginning of the conflict, an attack carried out by dozens of Iranian drones.

“Tehran has become a key ally of Moscow in this war, deliberately supplying it with weapons for attacks on peaceful cities,” condemned Podolyak.

Last week, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the people of Iran in a video message, saying that “Shah’s drones are terrorizing Ukraine every night.”

On Saturday, Tehran accused Zelensky of criticizing Iran in order to get more aid and weapons from the West.
