its president Uganda Yoweri Museveni passed one of the world’s toughest laws against the LGBTI+ communityhis spokesman said today, despite condemnation from Western governments, businesses and human rights activists.
Same-sex relationships are already banned in Uganda, as in over 30 African countries, but new bill targets LGBTI+ community even more.
He anticipates her Death penalty for “distinguished homosexuality”which includes same-sex relationships where someone is HIV positive and a 20-year sentence for “promoting” homosexuality.
Parliament Speaker Anita Amin was the first to announce via Twitter that Museveni had signed the bill.
“If the president announced it, then she really signed it,” Ugandan presidential spokesman Farouk Kiruda told Reuters.
Museveni, a staunch opponent of the rights of the LGBTI+ community, asked MPs to amend the original bill approved by Parliament in March.
On May 2, Parliament approved the revised bill, but only minor amendments were made to it.
The law has been amended so that simply being an LGBTI+ member is not a crime. He also changed the clause that forced those in same-sex relationships to declare it, which is now required only if it involves a child.
