G. Tsogopoulos in “K”: The future of Turkey is intertwined with Erdogan

The president Tayyip Erdogan he did it. He will lead his country for the next five years, and will begin his new term in exactly the year he wanted, namely a century after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.

His political success is undeniable. Not only does he not lose an election, but he endures even when his political opponents plot to overthrow him. Whether a political figure other than Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu will be able to win remains a hypothetical question that no longer matters much.

Erdogan did it earthquake tragedy Effective. Always the government can deal with natural disasters – even of this magnitude – by offering tangible rewards, while the opposition resorts to criticism and theoretical promises for the future. The President of Turkey was well aware of this and offered financial assistance to the victims of the earthquake.

It also equalized the votes of many Kurds To Kilicdaroglu with a controversial political argument about the latter’s possible soft line on the Kurdish issue. Thus, he convinced many doubting citizens to vote for him so that their president would have a clear, firm policy on this issue.

The result of the second round of the presidential elections was more or less expected. After Erdogan’s victory in the first round and the dominance of the Justice and Development Party in the parliamentary elections, the Turkish president played the card of political stability and justified himself. But the next day is hard.

Turkish society is polarized and Erdogan’s mission is to bridge the gaps within his country. An analysis of the geography of the vote shows that there are areas where the incumbent is extremely popular and others where his policies are frustrating, if not outrageous.

At the same time, Turkey’s economic problems, especially in connection with earthquakes, are getting worse. Erdogan is going his own way in stimulating growth and ignoring the traditional advice of experts to reduce inflation.

For United StatesErdogan’s re-election guarantees continuity in US-Turkish relations without domestic political adventures, but this continuity is not entirely consistent with American interests.

OUR Türkiye he will follow the same course in foreign policy in the coming years and should not be taken as an ally for granted. For Washington, this is a big problem, since it will not be able to rely on Ankara – at least to the extent that it wants to – to isolate Russia in the international sphere and limit the power of China.

In this context, Greece is called upon to manage its relations with Turkey in a dangerous environment. Türkiye does not change. However, the attitude of the United States towards its reliable allies in the Eastern Mediterranean is changing. These reliable allies include not only Greece, but also the Republic of Cyprus, although it is not a member state NATO. So, while we do not expect a different Turkish policy in Greek-Turkish and Cypriot affairs, a window of opportunity is opening for the excellent relations of Athens and Nicosia with Washington to lead the superpower to finally abandon the policy of equidistance.
