Political relations between Hungary and Sweden must improve before Budapest gives the go-ahead for the Scandinavian country to join NATO, Viktor Orban said on Tuesday.
The Hungarian Prime Minister, who so far continues to refuse to give Hungary’s approval for Sweden to join the North Atlantic Alliance after Finland, raised the issue during the Qatar Economic Forum.
“Political relations between Hungary and Sweden are terribly bad,” he said. “We do not want to introduce confrontations within NATO,” added the Hungarian Prime Minister.
Budapest reacts negatively to Stockholm’s criticism of how democracy and the rule of law are implemented in Hungary. Along with Turkey, which, in response to the Swedish candidacy, accuses Stockholm of not fighting what Ankara calls Kurdish terrorism, Hungary has so far blocked Sweden’s membership, but allowed Finland’s membership.
There is no date yet for the Hungarian parliament to vote on Sweden’s membership proposal, which must be ratified by all 30 members of the Alliance. NATO will hold its next summit in July.
