Ukrainian military and civilian authorities announced early Friday that air defenses had been activated for another night in Kyiv and other cities in the country as heavy Russian airstrikes continued in recent days.
Sirens sounded throughout the night in Kyiv and other cities. The military reported explosions in Lvov and Rivne (west), as well as in Kherson (south).
“There is air defense in Kiev’s airspace. Stay in shelters until the alarm is lifted!” Sergei Popko, the head of the military department of the capital, stressed in Telegram. Speaking of “explosions”, his colleague in the Krevneriysky (southern) district gave a similar recommendation Alexander Vilkul.
There are no reports of civilian casualties at this stage. Warnings began to be lifted a few hours after they were announced in Kyiv, in the central and southern regions, they remained in force in the eastern and western regions.
Earlier, the Ukrainian military reported shooting down several targets, saying that Ukrainian air defenses destroyed 19 drones and missiles out of 28 launched.
“Three caliber missiles were launched from the Black Sea and 16 drones were shot down. Shelling continues almost every day,” Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ikhnat said.
On the other hand, the Russian state news agency TASS reported that the city of Donetsk, controlled by pro-Russian troops, came under rocket fire. He did not provide information on casualties or damage.
The night before, Kyiv and other cities were subjected to a series of rocket attacks by Russian troops. The Ukrainian military claims to have shot down almost all Russian missiles, while the Russian Defense Ministry, on the contrary, stated that “all” targets were hit and “destroyed.”
The military command in Kyiv called the Russian attacks “unprecedented” in terms of their “power, intensity and variety” this month.
Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Japan, the UK, EU and US announced new economic sanctions against Russia, especially in the diamond sector, in an effort to limit Moscow’s ability to finance the war.
