U.S. President Joe Biden held talks with his team of congressional negotiators while on a trip to Japan, where the G7 summit begins on Friday, aides said.
“The president’s team has told him that there is steady progress,” a US presidential spokesman told reporters.
He added that Mr. Biden is confident that Congress will ensure that the risk of the federal government being forced into an unprecedented default in June is averted.
International organizations have warned that any default by a US state would be devastating to the global economy.
Mr. Biden decided to cut short his tour of Asia to return to Washington and personally lead efforts to find a compromise with the Republicans.
