Ukrainian resistance in the key town of Bakhmut in western Donetsk continues, with the Russians in retreat and Ukrainians saying they have advanced 1,700 meters on the flanks of the town, whose center remains under Russian control.
The press secretary of the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Serhiy Tserevaty, said on Ukrainian television that “during the fighting, our units, despite the lack of superiority in personnel, ammunition and equipment, continue to advance on the flanks. During this day, we managed to cover a distance of up to 1,700 meters, ”he said, referring to the last day.
According to him, Bakhmut remains a hotbed of hostilities in eastern Ukraine: “The enemy is trying, first of all, to capture this city, which he almost destroyed. Already (in the last 24 hours) the enemy shelled our positions with artillery 487 times, there were 25 skirmishes, six air raids, 130 militants were killed, 145 were wounded, 4 people were taken prisoner. The Msta self-propelled guns, Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicles and eight ammunition depots were also destroyed.
The pro-Russian regional administration in Donetsk reports that the city itself is now under daily shelling from Ukrainian forces, and that the Ukrainians have significantly reinforced their forces in Bakhmut and the surrounding area, moving reserves from the west of the country.
According to Kyiv, from February 24, 2022 to May 18, 2023, the Ukrainian Defense Forces neutralized about 201,100 Russian occupiers, including 510 people in the last 24 hours.
