The rupture of ties between the two countries should not come as a surprise to anyone, as relations between them have long been going through a turbulent period. Thus, reluctance to speak is a symptom, not the cause of the problem.

According to Foreign Policy, the Biden administration unfortunately does not have a specific China policy. Sometimes her approach is tough and other times more diplomatic but formal. In fact, it is noted that Biden did not give a single speech in which he would talk about any vision of US-China relations.

Instead, he delegated this task to other officials, including the ministers of foreign affairs, trade and finance, whose approach, however, is more limited. As a result, policy-making on China-related issues has been fragmented and accompanied by conflicting statements that have caused rather than disentangled confusion.

However, the main disadvantage of the approach Biden for China is that Washington is misinterpreting Beijing’s geopolitical goals. In particular, Mr. Biden he believes that the future coexistence of the two countries is compatible with the vision of China seeking a more central role at the global level, while at the same time he believes that the best way to avoid conflict is through a policy of prevention.

But by treating China as an immovable force, the US government is essentially taking a position that has the opposite effect of facilitating and normalizing China’s behavior.

Beijing’s goal

This approach contrasts sharply with a strategy of reciprocity, in which Washington will take a tough stance but at the same time appear willing to cooperate if and when China is more willing to do so.

At the same time, Xi’s goals are clear. It began to promote an alternative international construction that ignored the prevailing values ​​and, most importantly, left the United States on the sidelines. The result will be to replace the UN with a patchwork of ideological alliances that reflect Beijing’s values ​​and interests.

Thus, it is clear that all this represents a diplomatic war aimed at reducing and undermining American global influence.
